How Proper Insulation Can Help You Save Energy and Money
Because the majority of electric customers spend 50% of their bills on air conditioning and heating issues, tackling any home insulation issues you may have will greatly aid you in saving money and energy in the process.
It is well known that good insulation helps to regulate the temperature ratio in your home – heat to cold during the winter, and cold to heat during the summer. For many of us, it can be difficult to keep these ratios in check, as we may have poor insulation, or issues where there are leaks in the actual insulation. Having your home properly insulated can save up to 10% on electric bills, because leaks in your insulation system cause your AC/heating system to work inefficiently, costing more money, and depleting energy in the process. The more problems that exist with your home's insulation, the more energy is spent keeping your home at the proper temperature.
Where Can I Start to Double-Check My Insulation?
Generally, anywhere in the walls and ceilings where a hole has been cut to make room for any type of hardware. These are very good places to start:
- light switches
- electrical outlets
- bathroom fixtures
- windows
- doors
- ceiling fans, light fixtures, etc.
- attic and its entrances/exits
Helpful Energy Saving Insulation Tips
Building design, finances and weather patterns where you live should be considered when selecting the equipment you should use for insulation.
If you are building a home, look into materials that are structurally sound, and provide good insulation themselves.
The instructions from the manufacturers of insulation products are the best reference when learning how to install these products most effectively saving energy and high energy bills.
Turn off lights if you don't them, whenever possible. Depending on the type of light, some lights consume more energy, raising the heat level of your home.
Relocate your heat sensor away from hot materials like your stove, lamps, oven, dryer and any appliances that give off heat to operate. This helps to avoid false readings on the sensor.
When it is seasonably comfortable outside, turn off your central heating/cooling system, and open the windows, using natural air.
Make sure your central heating or cooling system is efficient. Chances are if it is older, it is less efficient than newer models.
Minimize the use of heat-generating appliances to reduce the use of your cooling system and save on your electric bill.
Check these things often, and repair anything that keeps you from saving energy once they are discovered
By properly insulating your home, you are decreasing the toll on the motor that regulates the temperature. A properly insulated house can save a consumer money on their energy bills, while saving energy as well.
