There are two major goals to saving energy. First, it saves money. Second, it helps keep our environment healthy and safe. Saving Energy is something that everyone, regardless or their age, abilities or financial status, can do. It only requires a few modifications in your daily routine. The following describes very simple steps to follow at work and in your home to fulfill your energy saving goals.

At Work:
Sometimes you may feel that you have no control over energy saving efforts at work. However, there are ways to gain a little control over the amount of energy your work place uses. First, remember you do have control over your immediate space. Secondly, lead an Energy Awareness Group at work and encourage others to follow your quest to save energy. Lastly, encourage your supervisor to create incentives for employees who take steps to save energy. Here are some easy to follow tips when trying to save energy at work:

• In the summer To reduce cooling costs adjust window blinds to cut direct sunlight
• In the winter to reduce heating costs keep sunny windows clear of blinds
• Turn off all electrical equipment at the end of the day. Computers, monitors, copy machines
• Unplug all appliances that do not need run 24/7. For example, don't unplug the refrigerator in the break room, Do unplug the microwave, coffee machine, toaster, printers, computer, etc.
• Turn off lights in bathroom after use
• Turn off lights near windows, open your blinds, and use natural light,

At Home:
You more control over your energy saving efforts at home than in your workplace. Of course if you don't live alone you will have to encourage family members to follow your lead. There are many new products being sold right now that are more energy efficient than items being sold ten plus years ago. These products include major appliances like your refrigerator, dishwasher, furnace, and so on. There are also products like solar panels and wind turbines for residential housing available that actually produce energy rather than use it. However, buying new appliances or installing energy producing systems, can be quite expensive and not an option for some people. Thankfully there are ways to save energy without spending a single penny. The above mentioned suggestions for your workspace can also be used at home. In addition to those tips the following is a list of simple things you can do to save energy in your residence:

• Use less hot water: take shorter showers, use cold water in your washing machine
• Depending on the time of year turn your thermostat or air conditioner down at night
• Compost all organic materials, recycle, and reuse
• Schedule one day a week to have a "black out" (no electricity use after dark)

Just by following the above mentioned energy saving tips you are on your way to being "green" and saving money.
