If you are looking to become more eco friendly the first and best place you should look to make improvements is in your home. The average home of today is extraordinarily better at its use and management of energy. That does not however mean that they are as good as they could be. There are literally hundreds of upgrades and projects you could do to make you home more eco friendly. There are also a host of easily installable ecological products that can save you hundreds if not thousands on heating and energy bills. For the most part these products are easy to find and even easier to install if you are at all handy around the home.

The first place to start looking at for new ecological products is going to be your heating and cooling systems. Start with the furnace and work your way from there. For most older homes this is going to be the biggest culprit for energy waste. The thing is though even the most efficient furnace in the world will not do you any good if you can not keep the heat in. While you may not need new windows, at the very least you should plastic over any older windows you may have. This first step is extremely inexpensive and should pay for itself the first month. After the windows look at the insulation in your home. If you your attic is uninsulated you can get a couple rolls of the pink stuff for cheap. This will do an amazing job at keeping heat inside your home and therefore lowering the amount of energy you use in the winter. These methods can help in the summer as well, but an even better option is to simply only use your air conditioner when absolutely needed.

Heat and cooling is only the first step for making a home ecologically friendly. The next step is to look at all of the chemicals and cleaning products you use around the house and try to replace them with newer ecologically friendly products readily available at your supermarket. For years people would use harsh chemicals and solvents in their homes without thinking twice about it. Now we have become much more conscious of what we are using in our homes and how it effects the environment. Companies have picked up on this as well and seek to provide products that are effective and eco friendly. Non toxic natural cleansers as well as building materials are easy to find. There is virtually no section of your home that would not benefit from you being eco conscious. When shopping for updates and new products keep this in mind and do your part to protect the environment.
