Saving energy is what we all need to do. Saving energy saves money and can help save our planet. Many of us have gotten in some bad habits over recent decades of not paying enough attention to the natural resources we are guzzling up. Many of these resources are finite, and they will run out at some point in time. Climate change and global warming issues are starting to get our attention, and many people are beginning to grasp the importance of these issues to our daily lives. There are those individuals who have already “got” the message and are trying to share their perspective and their knowledge so that all citizens of the Earth can be aware of the impact these issues can have on us and on future generations.

Many of us have gotten spoiled and aren’t used to thinking about the consequences of our actions. We need to “wake up” and pay attention; realize the magnitude of our collective actions on this planet. Finding ways to use less energy will have a positive effect by releasing fewer pollutants into the atmosphere, producing fewer emissions to further global warming, and create less acid rain. All this and you should feel an impact in your checking account as well. Some solutions may take a little more money in the beginning steps to put your plans into effect. In the long run, however, the savings will accumulate in your favor, and in your planet’s.

What can you do? Seal any cracks along your windows and doors. Weatherstripping kits are available to make the job easier. Choose an economical vehicle over a gas guzzler, or better yet, choose a hybrid, an electric car, or another vehicle that operates on a renewable energy source, where and when possible. Purchase energy efficient appliances for your home. If you use a dishwasher, don’t pre-rinse dishes – it wastes heated water; let the detergents do the work. Don’t leave your computer on around the clock; set it to sleep mode. Wash clothes in cold water; it’s the heating of the water that uses the energy and cold water detergents can be just as effective in cleaning. When possible, hang your clothes outside to dry. It will save the energy it takes to heat the dryer. Go back to the “good old days” when clothes were normally dried “on the line” and smelled “fresh.” If you have to use a dryer, choose a model that is the most energy efficient. Use your microwave more than your oven; a microwave uses only 20 percent as much energy as a conventional oven. Turn off lights in rooms of your home that you aren’t using.

These ideas and so many more can save you money and save the planet resources. There are energy experts and specialists now who can come to your home and suggest energy-efficient renovations and measures. If you need help knowing where to begin, you might try consulting an expert energy-saver for ideas.
