The goal was to manufacture a type of hydrogen that would not give off unwanted carbon dioxide as a byproduct. Hydrogen and oxygen are used together to generate electricity in fuel cells.

Instead of buying a vehicle, essentially using it up and throwing it away, Mr. Spowers has the innovative idea of buying the “use” of the vehicle rather than the vehicle itself. It is a “sale of service” method whereby the vehicle (an asset) would stay on the balance sheet of the provider. It is similar to the car leasing programs available today.

Public transit operator, Vestische Strassenbahnen GmbH, in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW), recently awarded a contract to the Hydrogenics Corporation for the delivery of two fuel-celled buses powered by hydrogen. The buses operate for a greater duration of time and over a greater distance than buses powered by batteries only. The automaker Chrysler has created a new division and dedicated a portion of its staff to manufacturing three EVs (electric vehicles) by 2010. A fourth EV alternative and green-friendly car, the Peapod, has also been announced as a viable Chrysler product in 2010. The Peapod will come in three varieties: with one seat, two seats, or as a utility van. It will provide 30 miles of driving per electric charge and is expected to cost approximately $20,000.

An ongoing effort by researchers at Manchester University in the UK has hopes of proving that hydrogen can be produced with less energy and, therefore, at less cost and finding yet another reason to rely on the utilization of fuel cell power. The project involves 13 universities across Britain and is set to explore the possibilities of something called “plasma reforming” which researchers believe could lower the temperatures that are needed to create hydrogen.
