Wind Energy in the USA (worldwide news) |
Wind is a natural source of energy for lessening toxic emissions in the US. Use of wind energy has the potential of reducing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, in the US by one third and worldwide by four percent. Wind energy is a renewable and sustainable resource, can reduce smog, and is a cleaner alternative. Clean air is healthier for everyone and, especially, for those with respiratory ailments. |

China Trading Hydro For Wind (worldwide news) |
BEIJING - The Chinese government along with its state-owned power companies are discovering the reality that pursuing renewable energies often carries with it unintended consequences and increased costs. The China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC) recently announced the start of a transition to more wind power, citing the increased costs and risks associated with increasing hydroelectric capacity in the nation. Bi Yaxiong, the vice-general manager of CTGPC was quoted as saying, "Previously, the biggest problem for hydro power was the cost, but now the biggest problem is relocating people and protecting the environment. The increasing social impact of hydro power, including paying compensation for relocated people, along with other political changes, has had an impact on the safety of investment." |

The Fastest-Growing Renewable Energy Source (worldwide news) |
Wind energy is the fastest-growing renewable energy resource. The cost of wind energy has dropped considerably within the last twenty years. The Federal production tax credit and local utilities’ incentives have made wind energy more affordable, practical, and competitive with other renewable energy sources. Wind turbine use has increased more than 25 percent per year over the last ten years. Still, wind only provides a small fraction of the world's energy. Failure to extend the production tax credit for the renewable energy industry threatens to slowdown further development in the U.S. However, this should be resolved with the new U.S. administration’s increased focus on alternative and renewable energy sources. |

Chasing Windmills (worldwide news) |
Wind power is easy to accept as a “renewable energy source,” because, we can see how it works when it is in motion, and we generally know, perhaps not when, but that wind will come again! So, can we deplete wind? Not really. More to the point, wind “depletes” itself, so our modern windmills must be fitted with energy storage for days when the atmospheric conditions are not conducive to blowing around. However, “the wind will blow as long as the sun shines.” |

Taiwan Looking To Become A Leader In Wind Power Utilization (worldwide news) |
Taiwan is planning to continue expanding its wind power installations and generation efficiencies. It is anticipated that by 2020, the nation’s total wind power capacity may reach 3,000 MW. The government of Taiwan is paying close attention to, and researching alternatives in, renewable energy resources. A researcher with the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center, Karen Ma, has predicted that China will usurp the United States’ role as largest country to have the most wind power installations by 2009. |

United Kingdom Producing 3 Gigawatts From Offshore Wind Farms (worldwide news) |
The UK just finished production and installation of a new wind farm offshore from the town of Lincolnshire. Britain’s total capacity of wind energy produced offshore now stands at 3 gigawatts. That is an increase of 2 gigawatts from just three years ago. The current amount of wind power from the UK’s offshore facilities is estimated to be capable of providing power to 300,000 homes. Wind capacity from offshore and onshore facilities combined is said to be able to power 1.5 million homes. The UK has actually replaced Denmark, the land where wind turbines originated, as the top wind power producer. |

Kansas Wind to Save State’s Economy (worldwide news) |
As yet another example of what renewable energy technologies can do for an economy, a $340 million wind farm is being constructed in Salina, Kansas and paid for by Horizon Wind Energy, based in Houston, Texas. Kansas is a state known for its wind, among other things, such as its native prairie and flat lands. To give you an idea how much potential is available in Kansas that is yet to be tapped, as a state it ranks third in “wind potential” but 12th as far as wind technology development goes. There is a lot of opportunity in Kansas. |

Wind Farms Head to the Ocean (worldwide news) |
Recently, the Mineral Management Services (MMS) declared its intention to utilize the Outer Continental Shelf for renewable energy projects, not just offshore drilling. While the U.S. Congress unobtrusively lifted the offshore drilling ban and you can anticipate new oil rigs being constructed in the quiet waters off the shelf, you can also expect to see renewable energy developments start popping up on federal waters. Improvements that are destined to create new scenarios for energy, such as “floating wind farms” and “wave energy barges” are journeying into the far reaches of the oceans. Within the next decade, expect the oceans to be filled with more than ocean-going vessels transporting goods. |
