Lack of Financing Turns Ethanol Into Nightmares for U.S. Midwest Small Towns (worldwide news) |
What once looked like “the” solution to a renewable fuel source “and” farmers’ economic struggles is now turning into just one more hardship to bear. As of January 2008, more than 139 ethanol plants were operating in the U.S. and more than 60 new sites were being planned for construction of ethanol refineries. The current rocky financial situation has caused at least 27 ethanol plants to either close or halt current construction efforts. |

Be Careful of Ethanol and Large Corporations Hungry for Biofuels (worldwide news) |
Ethanol, at first thought to be the saving grace for petroleum-hungry vehicles, has now been proven to still be a part of the problem and not necessarily the solution as was once thought. Research introduced through such scientific journals as Science magazine, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, and the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science have all brought forth revelations that ethanol is not the “end all” answer some believed it was. Production of ethanol is still emitting greenhouse gas toxins and contaminating fertilizer. The rate of production may actually have increased the amount of greenhouse gases produced. |

Answers to Poverty in West Africa May Include Biomass Energy (worldwide news) |
Countries such as Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Benin, Ivory Coast, Niger, Mali, Togo, and Senegal all have natural resources. The answers to the poverty in these countries could come from a bio-energy solution. Three key crises are being faced: there is not enough food – agricultural production is down all over the globe; there is not enough wood; and there is not enough fuel. What to do? Development alternatives – concentrate on bio-energy development. |
