Catholic University goes green

Yahoo! My Web Officials stated that over 1,000 solar energy panels are going to be installed on four buildings of the Catholic University in Washington this fall. This would make the University be part of the largest solar energy producing system in the entire Washington area.

The contract between the school and the Washington Gas Energy Services is to run 20 years. The project will start next month with a Gaithersburg contractor who will install 1000-by-6-foot solar energy collectors on the roofs of the Aquinas, the Raymond A. DuFour Center, Flather and Gibbons halls.

The university does not have to pay for the solar panels due to the fact that these are going to be owned by th Washington Gas only. It is estimated to produce around 340,000 kilowatt hours of electricity every year or about three quartes of the energy demand the university has every year. The energy is to be used in the buildings on which the solar energy panels are built upon. The installations are said to be completed by the end of the year which would make the university to a good example for the rest of Washington.
