The U.A.E. And Renewable Energy

Yahoo! My Web Abu Dhabi has set a goal of its aggregate energy production to be seven percent from renewable energy sources by 2020. Abu Dhabi is one of seven emirates that compose the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Its government has committed to this renewable energy program. The UAE is the fifth largest exporter of oil in the world.

The UAE has set the goal as part of the Government’s energy package which will be outlined in further detail in the first quarter of 2009. The announcement of the seven percent renewable energy goal was designed to coincide with the World Future Energy Summit which begins Monday, January 19, 2009 in the UAE and runs through January 21.

The UAE is currently in the process of constructing a “zero-carbon city” that will be known as Masdar. When comparing the UAE’s goal to other energy policies across the globe, seven percent is a significant number. The long term renewable energy goals of Abu Dhabi are a reflection of the Emirates’ overall desire to establish a leadership role in sustainability issues and renewable energy.

Masdar is the world’s first and foremost hydrocarbon-producing economy. One target of this new community is to enable Abu Dhabi to provide the world with a first-class research and development center to study new technologies for energy use. Masdar seeks to change Abu Dhabi’s role from that of “technology consumer to technology producer.”

The World Future Energy Summit is desirous of bringing groups together to help design solutions to the world’s energy struggles. An eye will be cast toward the future as government officials, business representatives, and leaders of renewable energy industries join forces to discuss the best methods available to provide answers to some of the world’s toughest energy questions. The Summit will address issues such as investment and funding, clean transport, energy policy, green buildings, biofuels, and wind and solar power.
