Australia Says No To Nuclear Power

Yahoo! My Web A recent report regarding Australia’s efforts to resolve climate change issues calls for the government to consider nuclear power. The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering states that the government needs to spend $6 billion on research to determine the best methods for reducing carbon emissions. No one single technology is going to be the saving factor, the report goes on to detail, and every technology should be considered.

The Government of Australia fully believes it does not need to add nuclear power to the equation for a successful climate change strategy. The government has committed to meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets without the aid of nuclear power. The policy of the Australian government has always been to prohibit a nuclear power industry in the country.

Federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson maintains that technology created the problems we have today with climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, and technology will be the answer to fixing the problems. Australia has a wide variety of renewable energy resources that can provide a wealth of power for the country when harnessed and combined appropriately. The government is focused on creating a debate about which technology will prove the most useful in providing solutions to climate change.

Those who have read the report are wondering if the Australian Government is ready and able to commit $6 billion for research as suggested by the report. Mr. Ferguson said that investment would be brought about by charging those who continue to pollute with carbon. Investment would come from the private sector and not just the government with a plan to reduce carbon pollution and meet renewable energy goals. State and territory governments would be involved as well.

The timeline seems to be the problem. The author of the report, Dr. John Burgess, believes Australia can make its renewable energy policies work, but it’s going to be extremely difficult to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from between 5 and 15 percent by the year 2020. An enormous amount of effort will have to be involved to get the technologies up and running in that short a time frame.
