New Brunswick, Canada, Plans Programs To Harvest More Biomass

Yahoo! My Web A program designed to strengthen the economy of New Brunswick involving the harvesting of biomass from the Crown forest area to support sustainable and renewable energy policies has been announced. The policy is known as the “Crown Land Forest Biomass Harvesting Policy,” and it is expected to be a very beneficial program.

Many individuals from bioenergy companies and the forest industry have proactively pursued an agreement that will allow sustainable harvest. The collection of limbs, twigs, and branches – all the parts of a tree that typically are not used – make for an excellent source of biomass which produces an energy source. A scientific method is used to choose an area that has the best potential to be harvested. Not only will biomass be used to develop energy to help replace the use of fossil fuels, but new market opportunities for forest biomass can be assessed and support for other New Brunswick economic development programs can be analyzed.

This policy is a huge step forward for New Brunswick in solving the dilemma over the use of fossil fuels – their cost and their effect on the environment. The articulations of energy-efficient and renewable alternatives will only further the competitiveness and the advantages that New Brunswick will have with these choices available.

Working with a program that is knowledgeable about and pays attention to operating within proper guidelines for harvesting biomass is important. This policy provides those guidelines, such as defining exactly what biomass is, looking at the procedures used to harvest the biomass, and setting sensible guidelines so as not to jeopardize the overall objectives of the harvest. It is important to not over-harvest a section of forest growth.

The Department of Natural Resources will entertain Request for Proposals of interested companies seeking to be awarded segments of biomass terrain. New Brunswick’s Crown forest contains just over 50 percent of forest land in the province at 3.3 million hectares. With responsible guidelines in place, New Brunswick should be ready to utilize their available resources in the best manner possible.
