Caribbean Island, Nevis, Is on the Road to Geothermal Energy Efficiency

Yahoo! My Web Just after Hurricane Omar passed Nevis, the West Indies Power company’s No. 3 well, located at Hamilton Estate, spouted off with a strong gush of steam. There was found to be an unbroken geothermal reservoir between Nevis No. 1 well (located at Spring Hill) and No. 3 that maintained the high temperatures and steam associated with a usable geothermal resource. Officials now believe the opportunity is wide-ranging for geothermal energy to produce hundreds of megawatts of power for the citizens of Nevis and surrounding regions.

Beginning in February 2007, the NIA (Nevis Island Administration) permitted the West Indies Power company to explore the possibility of a geothermal reservoir on the Caribbean island. The government was looking for a way to reduce living expenses and provide more affordable electricity for its citizens. This latest proof that the island can indeed supply itself with power through geothermal resources is a boon not only for the people, the government, and the island as a whole, but it also wins one more battle toward finding and instituting renewable energy alternatives to combat global climate change and dependence on fossil fuels.

This discovery also means that Nevis can increase its potential as an economic player in the world’s alternative energy development scenarios. Nevis is home to a large and wonderful source of heat and steam energy that it can capitalize on in several ways. A production rig that will help harness the geothermal energy is en route to the island and will be in place soon to deliver energy from this new and natural source to the island people and their neighbours.

Nevis, about 80 km west of Antigua and 350 km southeast of Puerto Rico, is part of the Leeward Islands of the West Indies. It experiences a fair amount of tourism which is only expected to increase with this latest environmentally friendly discovery.
